Memorial Day

Published by Andrew under Uncategorized

Several weeks ago I was supposed to meet with the photographer who took our family portraits for my parents 40th anniversary. He and his wife are good friends of my parents. The day I was to meet with him, he left me a voicemail while I was in class indicating they had had a death in the family and he would have to reschedule.
We just found out today that it was his wife who died. Mom considered Debbie her closest friend here in the Dallas area.
Mom was disappointed that she had never let Debbie know how much she meant to her.
Just serves as another reminder to not wait until it’s too late tell those you care about how you feel.

1. Take this list and post it into your own LJ, and mark the movies you’ve seen (in bold).
2. Add five more movies to the end of the list.
3. Count how many you have seen. If you’ve seen more than 70 movies, you are a Movie Whore. Post the score of how many movies you’ve seen in the subject line.
4. Use a LJ-cut since you’ve got at least one LJ-friend who doesn’t really want to see an ungodly number of movies snaking its way down the computer monitor (now at 311).

WordPress / Wiki integration?

Published by Andrew under Uncategorized

Does anyone else who is using WordPress know of a plugin or extension that would integrate a Wiki / Wiki syntax into Wordpress?
I found EzStatic and MicroWiki but they don’t quite do what I want. They allow you to set up a mini-Wiki that appears with your WordPress’ style. Neat, sure, but what I really want is to be able to write WordPress entries using Wiki syntax for links, headings, etc, and that can be accessed through the Wiki.

(Unrelated note: I just noticed that the LJ Extras fields at the bottom of this post entry page are finally working correctly! I didn’t change anything, but now instead of a bunch of database error messages after the “Current Mood” field, I have regular form elements for each of the LiveJournal paramaters, so I can finally select which User Pic to display with this entry, LiveJournal “Security Level”, etc. I suspect the problem was a bug in LJ’s API which they just fixed, so this plugin is finally able to access the database correctly. I’ll go check the journal as soon as I’m done with this entry.)

Youth, revisited

Published by Andrew under Uncategorized

I got the BMW in to the shop yesterday and got my windshield wipers fixed so it will pass the state safety inspection, but now the AC blower has died completely. That’s OK: it’s going back on Monday to have that replaced anyway (It was previously working only on speed 4. It finally died all together when the mechanic put it back together after taking it far enough apart to determine the cause of the problem.) I couldn’t stick around long enough for them to get the replacement parts and install them as I had to get to the Wildflower Festival.
It turned out my job at the festival was to get food ready for the various acts I mentioned earlier. You know those stories you hear about the rediculous things big name music acts put in their contracts for the green room? That’s what we were doing (well, the food part, anyway). So I got to put together the cart of food that went out to Starship. Too bad Grace Slick isn’t with the band anymore…
Anyway, my shift ended in time for me to go out and watch Starship perform. Starship is one of my favorite bands. This is my second time seeing them live. I saw them once about 20 years ago when they performed at the kick-off of the summer United Way collection campaign. My best-friend’s half-sister worked for National Semiconductor, who was sponsoring the party, so we got tickets to go the concert. We stood front row, stage left, not 5 feet from the wall-o-speaker. I was nearly deaf for 3 days after and loved every minute of it.
Last night I didn’t bother to go all the way up to the front row, which wasn’t quite so close to the stage or speakers, but I did lean up against the speakers that were set up about 300 feet from the stage, on the right (stage-left) side, so I had equal opportunity for permenant hearing loss. When I went home my hearing was perfectly normal, so I didn’t COMPLETELY relive my youghful experience, but I was happy anyway. Too bad Grace Slick isn’t with the band anymore…

(Apparently there are two bands touring as “Starship” now: Starship, with Mickey Thomas (the band I saw last night) and “Jefferson Starship” with a couple of the original members of “Jefferson Airplane“. Grace Slick has worked with the latter band, but apparently both Grace Slick and Mickey thomas were with “Starship” when I saw them live last time.)

Task Manager

Published by Andrew under Uncategorized

More and more I’m finding the need for a good “to-do” list / task manager application. I have a number incomplete tasks, not for lack of attention, but lack of completion. I’ll start to work on a project, get distracted by something in the middle of what I was doing, start to work on that, get distracted by something else, etc. I need a package to keep track of what I need to do, with possible sub-lists, that will serve as a reminder for things I haven’t done, as well as tracking what I have done and what I still need to do on individual projects.
Ideally this would tie in with my email application, which is Mozilla Thunderbird. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good task list manager that integrates with Thunderbird?

Wha’s up?

Published by Andrew under Uncategorized

It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything here, so I thought I’d give ya’ll (can you tell Texas is rubbing off on me?) a little update as to what I’ve been up to. (Or properly, “Up to what, I have been.” But ya know, that’s just a little too grammatical for me.)

Spring semester is over, finally. I expect probably two As and two Bs, though I didn’t do so hot on 3 of my 4 finals, and didn’t do very well on the midterms in those classes either, but my class work was excellent, so I think that will make up for it.

I’ve been playing a lot of Day of Defeat lately. Two weeks ago I submitted an application to join a clan with a nice, friendly server. Even though their web site said they were recruiting by invite only at that point, they interviewed me before the end of the week. (Yeah, I actually had an interview… go fig.) It only reinforced my positive feelings about this clan. They’re not all about m^d 1337 sk!llz! and ‘tude. They’re about sportsmanship, fair play, “honor” and just having fun. Admittedly my in-game skills aren’t the greatest, but they’re more interested in personality and can you play as part of a team. I was invited to practice with them that week (they play as part of Eagle leauge and are currently in second place with 2 matches left in the season.) then in 2 different scrims against other league teams. If all goes well in a few weeks I might get accepted into the clan. They don’t let you in right away. They invite you to practice with them for a few weeks, scrim, etc, to see how you play. It’s not about kill ratios, but can you work with your teammates, follow a game plan, back up other players, “take one for the team”, etc, as well as your attitude, can you get along with everyone, etc.
They’ll be coming out here in July for the CPL Extreme Summer Championship, so I’ll get a chance to meet some of the peaple I’ve been playing with. Maybe I’ll cook them a meal or two. :)
This next weekend I’ll be volunteering at the Richardson Wildflower Festival, but don’t look for me in any of the booths. I’ll be helping out in the kitchen. But I’m looking forward to checking out some of the musical acts, such as Cheap Trick (about whom I know very little other than their a rock / pop band who’s been around forever), and Starship (I’ve been a fan for many years, since I saw them live at a United Way summer campaign kick-off at National Semiconductor), Miranda Lambert, Julie Roberts, Terri Hendrix with Lloyd Maines, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band(because I’m a fan of brass and jazz / bluegrass music) and Pure Prairie League. And if you notice that many of those are pretty young woemen, well, call me a sucker if you want. Sex sells and I want to see (and hear) ‘em perform.

Closer to home, a new CPU and motherboard I bought months ago, then somehow managed to kill some time earlier this year, are confirmed dead. I bought an AMD Athlon 2800+ XP processor, Soyo SY-K7VME motherboard and some Centon PC2100 RAM, but wasn’t getting the performance I thought I should. I tweaked a jumper setting, didn’t see any change, kept experiementing and eventually it wouldn’t boot. Wouldn’t even post. Not even a beep to tell me what was wrong. I finally took it all back to MicroCenter yesterday to see if they would test it out for me and tell me which part I fried. Unfortunatly it looks like both the CPU AND the motherboard are toast. Oh well, I bought them as a combo, so by the time I pay the cost to replace either one alone, I’d pay just about as much as the two together cost originaly. Luckily the RAM has a lifetime warranty. If it turns out to be bad, I can still get it replaced (as the guy said “As long as there are no scorch marks on it, we’ll replace it.”)
